Bradgate Park

20 October 2006

Nick Gould has sent us a wonderful picture of Bradgate Park, Leicester with a brief history of the Park. He writes:

Here is a little history of the park: Bradgate Park is a deer park six miles north-west of Leicester. Its' main claim to fame is as the home of Lady Jane Grey, the nine day queen. Charles Bennion bought it in 1926 and presented it to the people of Leicestershire. It covers roughly 1000 acres and is preserved in a remarkably wild state.

When I was a child we were told that the old oaks in the park were topped after the execution of Lady Jane Grey, however, they are clearly old pollards and this romantic tale is only fiction.

What a shame its just folklore!
