Sherwood Forest needs your support!

3 December 2007

You may be forgiven for asking why we are featuring a tree from Sherwood Forest again as tree of the moment but there is a very good reason this week.

The People's 50 Million Lottery Giveaway is a competition to find the very best community project in the country and, as the name suggests award it a £50 million National Lottery grant. From the initial launch in June 2005, 33 entries have been whittled down to a shortlist of four. Sherwood: The Living Legend is one of the four, so we need to give it our support!

The forest is not the magnificent expanse of woods and heathland that it once was, in some ways a victim of its own success as a tourist attraction. Not to mention the centuries of industrial growth and land being cleared for agriculture.

If successful the grant will be used to recreate 300 hectares of new forest (imagine 400 football pitches) as well as creating a 250km network of paths, cycle routes and bridlepaths. Finally a state of the art visitor centre called 'The Tree' will be built using cutting edge sustainable technology.

The voting has now closed - we'll find out the results on ITV news on Wednesday December 12th.
