Ancient hawthorn, West Sussex

11 August 2008

This week sees a little piece of history with Tree of the Moment's first ever hawthorn! And could you find one in a more picturesque setting than the beautiful West Sussex coast? Well, imagine the coast behind the stream of garage doors...

But it just goes to show that ancient trees can thrive in the most unusual places, you certainly won't find a more 'urban' urban tree than this specimen. One of only 15 ancient hawthorn trees recorded on the website so far and certainly one of the biggest. So big in fact that Owen Johnson, ATH verifier and Tree Register registrar has put it on record as a TROBI Champion Tree. So the next time you are parking your car just take a second look at the tree sitting next to it - it might be something special!
