Volunteers are being sought to become veteran tree surveyors in Ryedale, thanks to Ryedale District Council, with support from North Yorkshire County Council.

“Ryedale is the most important area for veteran trees in the north of England,” said John Clayton, Trees and Landscape Officer with Ryedale District Council. “They are magnificent features in the Ryedale landscape and are great places for invertebrates, lichens and fungi. Unfortunately we have few records of where our oldest trees are and we need the help of willing volunteers who are interested in becoming our eyes and ears on the ground”.

To help people become volunteer surveyors, training days are regularly held. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn more about ancient trees, why they matter, how to identify an old tree, and how to take part in the veteran tree survey.
