Goodwood Estate to be added to the ATI

The Goodwood Estate, in partnership with the Woodland Trust, have undertaken a training session with volunteers to help the estate record its most important trees.

Recent geological surveys have identified a series of historic parkland boundaries within the larger modern estate boundary. Recording the trees, it is hoped, will help highlight these and discover more about the earlier management of this part of West Sussex.

Volunteers learnt how to identify and record veteran and ancient trees and were introduced to some very special Goodwood Park trees. Woodland Trust Site Manager, Sandy Williamson and Goodwood Estate Head Forester, Darren Norris, organised the training event and recording will begin before Christmas, weather permitting!

It is also planned to record and update some of the historic plantings within the gardens and parkland close to Goodwood House, where there are magnificent cedars, planted in 1761 and a number of exceptionally fine Cork oak.

If you would like to join the volunteers on their discovery around the Goodwood Estate, please contact Sandy SandyWilliamson@woodlandtrust.org.uk for more details.
