Bassenthwaite Tree Project

Join this project and explore records of the past for ancient trees

The Bassenthwaite Tree Project aims to identify ancient trees and treescapes (e.g. areas of wood pasture) which are not protected under the Ancient Woodland Inventory.

The project team has currently pulled together data from organisations such as the Woodland Trust and the National Trust about interesting sites with ancient trees with information from the habitat survey records held by Natural England. Many sites appear to be ancient woodland but records are showing that the last time the sites were surveyed, many harboured very mature & ancient trees.

The survey by Natural England was carried out in the 70s and 80s which means that the data is old and ready for re-visiting by ground proofing. If anyone is interested in going on a 'tour' of potentially ancient tree sites in the Bassenthwaite area as a volunteer for the project to discover if the records are still relevant, they can take part by contacting Lindy Smith at H.E.C.

The Bassenthwaite Tree Project is being ran by the Hallam Environmental Consultants on behalf of Natural England.
