In 1993, a group of enthusiasts, both professional and amateur, who recognised how special elderly trees were, came together to form the Ancient Tree Forum, a registered charity. They wanted to act as champions for the ancient tree cause, campaign for their protection, promote best conservation practice and spread the word about their importance.

The forum became key partners in English Nature’s Veteran Trees Initiative. Forum members contributed to the handbook: Veteran Trees: A guide to good management and they also joined forces with the Woodland Trust to promote the conservation of ancient trees.

One of the most charismatic members of the forum is Ted Green, one of its founders, who works alongside the Woodland Trust’s Jill Butler, and travels across the UK ensuring that as many people as possible, realise how precious ancient trees are and how they can be protected.

Field visits

The forum meets regularly to discuss the best management for these special trees and has a website and online community, at which you can browse the latest information on different topics or start a new subject of your own.
